Dental hygienist Ben McGiffin screens a young patient

Dental hygienist Ben McGiffin screens a young patient

  • The first objective is to have a licensed dentist or registered dental hygienist  screen and assess  each child to see if they have the following: no visible decay; visible decay; or urgent dental needs. The students with urgent dental needs are immediately referred to the school nurse with the intent of contacting parents. Smile Partners currently has two part time dentists to provide exams and recommend interim treatment.
  • The second objective is to reduce the number of students with untreated decay by making cavity prevention services available to any student with parental consent, and providing those services at school. Sealants and fluoride varnish are proven to be effective at reducing cavities by over 85%. At the end of the child’s treatment visit, he/she goes home with a goodie bag filled with oral hygiene items and an oral health report card.
  • The third objective is to reduce the number of students who return the next year with the same untreated decay that was noted in the previous year.
